Joe Kay Uses Hip-Hop to Bridge Faith and Youth Culture

Ghanaian urban gospel artiste Joe Kay has shared how he uses hip-hop music as a creative tool to communicate spiritual truths in ways that resonate with today’s youth, without compromising the message of the gospel.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Highway 10.19 on ZED FM, the artiste explained that his approach is to first attract listeners through engaging rap artistry before gradually introducing spiritual content and biblical themes.
According to him, this method allows him to reach both Christian and non-Christian audiences, especially young people who may not initially be drawn to gospel music.
“For me personally, let me talk about rap. A lot of people love my rap, but it’s not everybody that listens to it who is a Christian,” he explained.
He said his goal is to use lyrical creativity, rhythm and wordplay to capture attention first, then introduce deeper messages rooted in scripture.
“People love the cadence and everything, then the word starts coming in. They hear it and realise this is different,” he said.
Joe Kay noted that his music often blends metaphors, punchlines and biblical references in a way that encourages curiosity among listeners. He cited examples of incorporating scriptural references such as Jude 1:9 into his lyrics, explaining that such content often leads listeners to research the meaning behind the lines.
“If you are a lover of rap and you don’t even understand the Christian belief, you will be prone to go and research what is being said,” he stated.
He believes this approach helps to gradually draw people toward faith-based understanding through music rather than direct preaching, which some young listeners may initially resist.
The artiste further explained that hip-hop provides a unique platform because many people engage with it for its rhythm and energy before paying attention to the message behind the lyrics.
“Some people don’t even want to hear the gospel at all, but when you package it in hip-hop, they start enjoying it before the message hits them,” he added.
Joe Kay also revealed that he uses digital tools such as YouTube captions to ensure his message is accessible to a wider audience, including those who may struggle to clearly hear or interpret fast-paced rap lyrics.
He said this strategy is intentional and aimed at making the gospel more inclusive and relatable.
According to him, the ultimate goal is not just entertainment but transformation, as he believes music can serve as a powerful bridge between culture and faith.
Joe Kay concluded that while he does not know how others approach gospel rap, he believes his method is guided by purpose and creativity aimed at reaching hearts that might otherwise remain untouched by traditional gospel delivery.
