GSE Equity Market Records 72% Return in April

The Ghana Stock Exchange continued its strong bullish run in April 2026, with the market delivering one of its strongest performances in recent years as investor activity and equity returns surged sharply.

According to the Exchange’s Summary of April 2026 Market Activities, the benchmark GSE Composite Index recorded a year-to-date return of 72.52% by the end of April, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index outperformed even further, posting an impressive 90.21% gain.

The strong rally reflects renewed investor confidence in Ghana’s equity market amid improving macroeconomic conditions, easing inflation, relative currency stability and growing optimism around corporate earnings prospects.

Market participation also expanded significantly during the period. The number of transactions executed on the market rose to 154,467, representing a staggering 999.17% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Analysts say the sharp increase in trading activity signals stronger retail and institutional investor participation as equities continue to regain attractiveness following recent economic stabilisation efforts.

Several listed companies recorded substantial gains during the month, led by SIC Insurance Company PLC, which emerged as the top price gainer with a 71.21% increase in share price.

Other major gainers included Clydestone (Ghana) PLC with 61.62%, GCB Bank PLC at 53.55%, and Ecobank Transnational Inc. which gained 46.31%.

Additional strong performers included CalBank PLC, Scancom PLC, ZEN Petroleum PLC, Atlantic Lithium Limited, Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC and Cocoa Processing Company PLC.

Despite the broad rally, a number of equities posted declines. Access Bank Ghana PLC recorded the steepest fall, declining by 34.36%, while other laggards included Benso Palm Plantation PLC, Fan Milk PLC, Enterprise Group PLC and Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC.

Meanwhile, activity on the Ghana Fixed Income Market also strengthened considerably during the month.

The fixed income market closed April with total traded volume of GH¢35.05 billion, representing a 93.45% increase year-on-year.

Treasury Bills remained the dominant instruments on the market, accounting for 55.21% of total traded volume, while Government Notes and Bonds contributed 43.80%. Corporate Bonds represented a relatively small share of activity at 0.99%.

Market analysts say the strong performance across both equities and fixed income reflects improving investor sentiment toward Ghanaian financial assets as macroeconomic conditions stabilise and confidence gradually returns to the economy.

The continued rally on the GSE is also expected to strengthen capital market activity and potentially improve access to long-term financing for listed firms if the momentum is sustained.
