Sports Minister Kofi Adams Submits Sports Fund Bill to Parliament for Consideration

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, on Thursday, tabled the Sports Fund Bill in Parliament to improve funding for all sporting disciplines in Ghana.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Adams recounted how the lack of funds has been a major obstacle to the development of sports, particularly in disciplines other than football.
“It’s quite clear that over the years, this house has had challenges to deal with many issues that affect funding in our sports generally. Funding is mostly secured to support just football, when indeed, when we talk about sports, it goes beyond football,” he said.
He recalled numerous attempts to establish proper structures to address the issue.
“There have been many attempts to put together a funding system that will enable the Ministry [Sports and Recreation] execute its program by bringing on board many more sporting disciplines and supporting them,” Adams noted.
The Sports Minister argued that when approved, the Sports Fund will solve these challenges, leading to the growth of sports in the country.
“When approved, we will not have the challenges of funding our sports, and sports will grow to bring about development and support other progressive activities that we do in this country,” he added.
Over the years, Ghanaian athletes have struggled to secure funding to participate in major international tournaments.
And aside from football, several sporting disciplines, federations, and associations rely heavily on handouts to keep their heads above water.
Adams believes the passing of this bill will provide the resources needed to resolve these perennial challenges.
