Assemblyman killed, two injured in Mpatuam residents clash with military

One person has been confirmed dead and two others are receiving treatment after sustaining gunshot wounds in a clash between the military and residents of Mpatuam in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.

The deceased, identified as the Assembly Member for Aboabo, Samuel Danquah, was confirmed dead at a hospital after he was allegedly shot by soldiers during an altercation.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, following violent clashes between the youth of the community and security personnel on a mining concession.

According to the Assembly Member for Mpatuam, Kwame Sakyi, tensions escalated after residents accused security personnel of Asanko Mines of killing a miner the previous day.

In protest, residents blocked roads leading to the community, sparking confrontations with the military and mine security.

“During the confrontation, the armed soldiers opened fire on the residents. A stray bullet allegedly struck the Assembly Member, killing him instantly, while two others sustained injuries,” Sakyi said.

Reports indicate that the violence was triggered when an unidentified man was allegedly killed at the company’s mining site.

His family rejected the body, accusing security personnel of foul play.
