Parliament begins vetting of seven Supreme Court nominees today

By: Rebecca Okine

Starting today, Monday, June 16, Parliament’s Appointments Committee will vet seven nominees selected by President John Dramani Mahama for appointment to the Supreme Court. The process, scheduled to run through Wednesday, June 18, 2025, aims to fill current vacancies on the highest court in the land.

The vetting follows nominations made under Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution to fill vacancies on the highest court in the land.

The nominees, all current Justices of the Court of Appeal, are Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.

These nominations come in the wake of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo’s suspension on April 22, 2025, following a prima facie case established in three separate petitions seeking her removal. A five-member committee was later established to investigate the matter. The President’s nominations were formally communicated via a letter dated April 29, 2025, signed by Executive Secretary to the President Dr. Callistus Mahama, and addressed to Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie. The Judicial Council has also confirmed that it is reviewing the nominations “in preparation for the successive processes.”
