TEWU-KNUST flags irregularities in Registrar appointment

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is facing criticism from its workers’ union amid concerns over irregularities in the ongoing process to appoint a new Registrar.

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH), KNUST Local Chapter, has accused the university’s Governing Council of “serious administrative negligence” that could undermine the integrity of the recruitment process.

At a press briefing, KNUST Chairman of TEWU-GH, Charles Arthur, highlighted conflicting information in official university communications regarding the Registrar’s tenure.

While a recent advertisement by the Governing Council states that the Registrar position will become vacant on August 1, 2025, the University Recorder publication lists the current Registrar’s retirement date as October 31, 2025.

“This glaring discrepancy means the university risks having two Registrars simultaneously for three months, a situation unprecedented in KNUST’s history,” Mr. Arthur said.

He warned that this administrative oversight could damage the university’s reputation and disrupt a smooth leadership transition. Mr. Arthur described the situation as “a fundamental administrative error that could tarnish the institution’s image and undermine its leadership transition process.”

The union has called on the Minister of Education and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to suspend the appointment process immediately.

“We urge the Minister of Education and the Director-General of GTEC to act swiftly by suspending the ongoing recruitment process and commissioning an independent investigation into the matter,” he added. Mr. Arthur stressed the need for transparent and consistent procedures to protect the credibility of leadership appointments in public universities.
