Prioritize mental health with healthy coping habits – Advocate tells Ghanaians

By Solomon Nartey Tetteh

Mental health advocate Rachael Martey has urged Ghanaians to adopt healthy coping strategies to protect their emotional wellbeing and manage everyday stress effectively.

The call comes as Mental Health Awareness Month draws to a close.

Speaking on Zed FM’s Business Breakfast Show on Friday, May 30, Ms. Martey emphasized that mental health deserves the same level of attention as physical health.

“Many people are silently dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression, especially in Ghana and across Africa. Unfortunately, stigma and fear of judgment stop them from seeking help early,” she said.

Ms. Martey called on the public to break the silence and normalize conversations about mental health. She also encouraged the integration of leisure and relaxation activities into daily routines to manage stress more effectively.

“How you manage stress contributes significantly to your overall mental wellbeing. Be intentional about how you respond to pressure from work, family, relationships, and life in general,” the mental health advocate noted.

Ms. Martey believes tackling mental health proactively, through education and supportive coping mechanisms, is key to building a resilient society.
