OSP Receives Three Petitions over Afenyo-Markin Extortion Allegations

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has disclosed that it has received three separate petitions concerning allegations of extortion and related conduct made by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
According to the OSP, one of the petitions was jointly submitted by two individuals, while two other petitions were submitted separately by different individuals, all in connection with the allegations against the Minority Leader.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 24, the anti-corruption agency said it had taken note of the public allegations and would assess the petitions to determine whether the matter falls within its statutory mandate.
The OSP further indicated that, after assessing the allegations, it would determine whether there are grounds for any further investigative action.
The development follows allegations by Mr Gyamfi, who accused Mr Afenyo-Markin of extortion. The Minority Leader has denied the allegations and has indicated that he intends to pursue legal action against the GoldBod Chief Executive Officer.
The dispute comes amid an ongoing public disagreement between the two over claims involving GH¢22 billion in losses, equivalent to approximately US$1.7 billion, allegedly associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025.
Meanwhile, the United Party has also petitioned the Attorney-General, as well as other anti-corruption and security agencies, to investigate the extortion allegations against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The petition was submitted by the party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, and its Legal Director, Andrew Appiah-Danquah.
The OSP’s assessment will determine whether the allegations fall within its jurisdiction and whether the circumstances warrant further action by the anti-corruption agency.
