University Staff Unions Suspend Strike

Three major university staff unions have suspended their indefinite strike following the Ministry of Finance’s approval of revised conditions of service.
The Senior Staff Association–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), and Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) announced the suspension in a joint statement.
The unions had gone on strike earlier this month to protest the government’s failure to implement key components of a Memorandum of Agreement signed on November 13, 2024. The agreement included adjustments to Tier-2 pension contributions, vehicle maintenance, and off-campus allowances.
“We appreciate the support of our members and the understanding of the general public. However, we caution that this is only a suspension, not a termination of the strike. Should there be further delays or breaches, we will be compelled to resume our action,” said Zakaria Mohammed, Chairman of SSA-UoG.
The Ministry of Education and Ghana Tertiary Education Commission have welcomed the decision, hoping it will create room for ongoing dialogue and durable solutions to labour tensions. University management teams have urged staff to return to work promptly to minimize disruption to students.
The suspension comes after the Ministry of Finance formally approved proposed allowances, a decisive step that de-escalated the situation. The unions’ decision to suspend the strike aims to restore academic and administrative activities across public universities and technical institutions.
