GBA Chair urges Ghanaian Beverage Companies to Go Global as Awards Mark 10 Years

By Maame Efua Kwaduah

The Director of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research–Food Research Institute (CSIR), Prof. Charles Tortoe, has called on Ghanaian beverage companies to break past local limitations and position their brands for global competition.

Speaking at the launch of the 10th anniversary of the Ghana Beverage Awards (GBA) on Wednesday, November 26, in Accra, Prof. Tortoe, who also chairs the GBA Committee described the milestone as a celebration of “a decade of resilience, creativity and outstanding achievements” in one of Ghana’s most dynamic industries.

This year’s edition, themed “A Toast to 10: Ten Years of Excellency,” highlights not only a decade of honouring exceptional beverage brands but also a decade of growth, innovation, and transformation across the sector.

Prof. Tortoe explained that when the awards were first conceived, the goal was to identify, evaluate and celebrate the industry players who feed the nation and contribute significantly to the economy.

“Looking back today, we can confidently say that the industry has not only met the vision but exceeded it,” he said.

Reflecting on the past ten years, he noted how small, emerging businesses have grown into household names and how local recipes have evolved with modern technologies to meet both local and international standards. He pointed to the industry’s shift from basic processing to more sustainable, scientifically driven production.

The CSIR Director also stressed the importance of excellence throughout the value chain from food safety and quality management to innovative packaging that extends shelf life and responsible sourcing of ingredients.

He highlighted the crucial role of the GBA judging committee, made up of experts from the CSIR, Ghana Standards Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, and other relevant bodies. Their mandate, he said, is to uphold the credibility of the awards through factory inspections, certification assessments and encouraging best practices not to police producers, but to protect consumer trust.

With the 10th anniversary serving as a “legacy year” for GBA, Prof. Tortoe urged the sector to look ahead with a global mindset.

“Beyond celebrating the past, we must look ahead to the future. We want our brands to travel beyond our borders and showcase the ingenuity of Ghanaian producers on the global stage,” he said.

He also acknowledged the vital role of consumers, noting that their loyalty and feedback continue to shape the evolution of local brands.

He assured stakeholders of a credible and prestigious awards ceremony that reflects the innovation and hard work across Ghana’s beverage ecosystem.

The launch brought together regulators, manufacturers, and key industry stakeholders to celebrate a decade of achievements and set the tone for the next chapter.

As the GBA enters its 10th year, Ghana’s beverage industry stands as a symbol of resilience, creativity and growing global ambition
