Small-Scale Miners Association launches taskforce to fight river mining

The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Ghana (NCSSMAG), has launched a special taskforce to clamp down on illegal mining activities, particularly on the country’s rivers and water bodies.

In a statement released, the Association said the taskforce will operate in key mining districts to monitor activities, enforce compliance and promote responsible mining practices among its members.

The group has also introduced a peer review system, where members will assess one another’s operations to ensure adherence to environmentally sustainable guidelines.

To boost monitoring efforts, NCSSMAG has procured a mini speedboat to patrol water bodies. The move supports the government’s Blue Water Guards Initiative under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

President of the Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, warned illegal miners, especially those operating directly on rivers, to stop their activities immediately.

“Our message is clear: all illegal mining on water bodies must cease at once. The taskforce will not compromise in protecting our rivers for present and future generations,” he said.

NCSSMAG reiterated its commitment to responsible mining and pledged to work closely with government and other stakeholders to ensure sustainable use of Ghana’s natural resources.
