Ghanaian teen Josh Acheampong wins FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea

By Lukman MUMIN

English-Ghanaian defender Josh Acheampong made history by winning the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea.

The 19-year-old became the sixth player with Ghanaian heritage to win the coveted trophy after playing a role in Chelsea’s successful campaign in the United States.

Although he made just one appearance at the newly expanded tournament, it was enough for him to return to London with a medal.

He joins Sulley Muntari, Danny Welbeck, Jerome Boateng, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Jeremy Doku as players of Ghanaian descent who have etched their names on the golden trophy.

Acheampong, who featured in the group stage match against Esperance de Tunis, watched from the bench at MetLife Stadium as the Blues stunned European champions Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final.

Chelsea talisman and tournament best player Cole Palmer netted a brace before new signing Joao Pedro exquisitely finished an assist from Palmer to dismantle PSG in the first half.

PSG came close a few times, but Golden Glove winner Robert Sanchez denied Ousmane Dembele to stop the French champions from staging a potential comeback.

Meanwhile, Acheampong enjoyed an outstanding breakthrough season, adding the FIFA Club World Cup trophy to the UEFA Europa Conference League title won earlier in the campaign.

The FIFA Club World Cup is set to return in 2029, while Chelsea and PSG now head into a short break before preseason begins.
