Akon Questions P-Square Management Over May D Dispute

Senegalese-American singer, songwriter, record producer and businessman Akon has criticised the management of Nigerian music duo P-Square over its handling of artiste Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as Mr May D.
Akon made the remarks while reflecting on his encounter with May D during the production of the music video for “Chop My Money” in 2012.
The comments come amid renewed attention on the long-running dispute involving P-Square twins Peter and Paul Okoye and their elder brother and former manager, Jude Okoye.
The controversy intensified after Peter Okoye began a series of public revelations detailing issues he said contributed to the eventual breakdown of P-Square.
According to Akon, he became concerned about the group’s management after being told that May D would not be included in the video for a song that featured his voice.
“I knew something wasn’t right with the management when they wanted us to shoot the video without May D. That was simply unprofessional,” Akon said in an interview with Afrocani.
He said he felt May D deserved an opportunity to appear in the video because of his contribution to the song.
“I first sensed something was wrong when the management told me May D would not appear in the video for a hit record that carried his golden voice,” he said.
“Honestly, I felt bad for him. I know how painful it can be to hear your voice become part of something successful, yet be denied the opportunity to stand in the visuals and be seen.”
Akon said he subsequently insisted that May D be brought to the United States for the video shoot.
“I believe anyone who has talent and is being heard deserves the opportunity to be seen. That is what fame is supposed to be about – opening doors, not closing them,” he said.
After meeting May D, Akon said he recognised his musical potential but believed the artiste lacked sufficient understanding of the business side of the industry.
He said he made May D a private offer intended to help him gain greater independence, but the offer was later disclosed to someone Akon believed was preventing him from progressing.
“That moment taught me something painful: talent can open the door, but ignorance can keep you trapped outside it,” Akon said.
May D has previously said his problems with P-Square began after he was excluded from the “Chop My Money” remix video shoot.
The episode has renewed debate over professional music management, artiste contracts and the need for clearer legal agreements between artistes and management teams.
