Coffee Federation urges gov’t to prioritise sector for economic growth

The Coffee Federation of Ghana (CFG) has urged the government to give greater focus to the country’s flourishing coffee sector as part of International Coffee Day celebrations.

The Federation emphasised that a robust coffee industry is a significant contributor to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and plays a vital role in the national economic reset agenda.

In a statement signed by the President of the Coffee Federation of Ghana, Dr Chief Nat Nsarko, the Federation expressed support for initiatives that utilise coffee cultivation to rehabilitate lands damaged by illegal mining.

The Federation stressed that coffee cultivation offers hope to communities and aids ecological restoration of degraded areas.

The CFG called on the Mahama-led government to prioritise the coffee sector, stressing that it is not merely agricultural production but also a means to create sustainable livelihoods and reduce poverty nationally.

“I call on the Government of Ghana to give special attention to the coffee sector — from the smallholder farmers who cultivate it, to the exporters who bring Ghana’s coffee to the world, and the policymakers whose leadership can establish coffee as a key contributor to our GDP and national economic reset,” the statement said.

It noted: “A stronger coffee sector is not just about agriculture; it is about creating sustainable livelihoods, reducing rural poverty and diversifying the foundation of our national economy.”

The Federation also called on its members to unite and commit to growing the sector.
“Let us align properly for growth and prosperity, leveraging innovation, collaboration and best practices to strengthen our value chain. The future of Ghana’s coffee industry is bright, but it requires dedication from every stakeholder to realise the transformation we envision,” the statement indicated.

Finally, the CFG urged all stakeholders to resolve to make coffee not only a source of pride but also a strategic pillar for Ghana’s economic recovery, environmental renewal and global competitiveness.
