Newcastle United Part Ways With Eddie Howe
Eddie Howe has brought his successful but challenging spell at Newcastle United to an end after leaving the club with immediate effect, bringing down the curtain on a tenure that transformed the Magpies from relegation candidates into domestic trophy winners and Champions League participants. His departure follows growing uncertainty over the club’s direction after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign and a turbulent summer transfer window. Reports indicate Howe made the decision after discussions with senior club officials, with German coach Matthias Jaissle emerging as the leading candidate to replace him. Howe is also understood to be planning a break from football management.
The 48-year-old took charge of Newcastle in November 2021 following the departure of Steve Bruce, inheriting a side battling relegation. He quickly revitalised the team, steering them to Premier League safety before overseeing one of the club’s most successful modern eras.
Under Howe’s leadership, Newcastle qualified for the UEFA Champions League on two occasions, in 2023 and 2025, while ending a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by lifting the Carabao Cup in 2025. His side also reached the Champions League knockout stage before being eliminated by Barcelona and established themselves among England’s leading clubs during the early years of the Saudi-backed ownership.
However, fortunes changed dramatically last season. Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League after suffering 17 defeats in 38 matches, a significant decline from their previous top-five finish. The club’s League Cup defence ended in the semi-finals, while inconsistent league performances placed Howe under increasing scrutiny.
The summer transfer window further complicated matters. Newcastle lost several influential players, including Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, while captain Bruno Guimarães has also attracted strong transfer interest. Reports suggest Howe became increasingly frustrated with the club’s recruitment strategy and the inability to adequately replace departing stars, contributing to his decision to step aside.
