Medeama and Nations FC Prepare for Crucial CAF Interclub Draw in Cairo

Ghana’s representatives in next season’s CAF interclub competitions, Medeama Sporting Club and Nations FC, are set to learn their opening opponents when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stages the preliminary round draw in Cairo, Egypt, on August 6. The ceremony will officially launch the journey toward Africa’s two biggest club tournaments, with both Ghanaian sides aiming to make their mark on the continental stage after earning qualification through contrasting but memorable domestic campaigns.

Medeama secured their place in the 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League by lifting the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League title. The Tarkwa-based club has steadily grown into one of Ghana’s most competitive teams since its establishment in 2008, rising from the lower divisions to become a consistent force in the top flight. The Mauve and Yellow enjoyed a historic breakthrough by winning their first-ever Ghana Premier League title in 2022/23 before returning to the summit with another championship-winning campaign in 2025/26. Medeama also gained valuable continental experience during their maiden CAF Champions League group-stage appearance, a platform they will hope to build upon this season.

Nations FC, meanwhile, booked a place in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup after capturing the 2025/26 MTN FA Cup. Although the Abrankese-based side suffered relegation from the Ghana Premier League, their cup triumph earned them the rare opportunity to compete in Africa despite dropping to the second tier. Founded only a few years ago, Nations FC have enjoyed a remarkable rise through Ghanaian football, progressing rapidly from the lower divisions to the Premier League before securing their first major domestic trophy. Their continental debut now presents an opportunity to demonstrate their quality beyond Ghana’s borders.

The preliminary round draw will determine the first hurdle facing both clubs. First-leg matches are scheduled for September 4 to 6, with return fixtures taking place between September 11 and 13. Teams advancing from that stage will contest the second preliminary round in October, where successful clubs will earn qualification to the lucrative group stage.
