SIC Insurance Launches Electric Vehicles to Drive Green Transition Agenda

By Maame Efua Kwaduah

SIC Insurance PLC has launched a fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its Green Transition Agenda, reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action and responsible corporate governance.

The initiative, unveiled at a ceremony attended by company executives, staff, partners, stakeholders and members of the media, also included the introduction of electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support the transition to cleaner transportation.

Speaking at the launch, Managing Director of SIC Insurance PLC, James Agyenim-Boateng, described the initiative as a major milestone in the company’s history and a practical demonstration of its commitment to supporting Ghana’s climate action objectives and sustainable development agenda.

He said the Government of Ghana has demonstrated strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy and encouraging cleaner transportation solutions, adding that SIC Insurance is aligning its corporate strategy with these national priorities through investments in sustainable technologies.

Mr. Agyenim-Boateng recalled that more than a year ago, the company initiated a pilot project to power selected SIC branches with solar energy. He explained that although the project started on a modest scale, it reflected the company’s resolve to move beyond discussions on sustainability by investing in practical environmental protection initiatives.

According to him, the pilot solar project has produced encouraging results, prompting management to extend solar energy installations to major SIC branches across the country.

He said the deployment of electric vehicles and the installation of charging infrastructure represent the next phase of the company’s sustainability programme, stressing that the vehicles symbolise more than a change in transportation.

The Managing Director explained that the initiative reflects SIC Insurance’s determination to reduce its environmental footprint while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

He noted that, as an insurance company, SIC’s core business is centred on managing risk and protecting lives, property, businesses and communities, describing climate change as one of the greatest threats confronting societies today.

Mr. Agyenim-Boateng stated that it would be inconsistent for the company to provide protection against risks while remaining indifferent to one of the world’s biggest environmental challenges.

He said the electric vehicle initiative, together with the ongoing expansion of solar energy projects, demonstrates SIC Insurance’s determination to lead by example in promoting environmental sustainability.

The Managing Director commended the Board of Directors, management, staff, partners and stakeholders for supporting the Green Transition Agenda and helping to make the initiative a reality.

He further stressed that modern businesses must pursue profitability while at the same time protecting the environment and delivering positive social impact.

Mr. Agyenim-Boateng described SIC Insurance as a forward-looking institution that remains responsive to emerging global trends and committed to responsible corporate citizenship.

He also encouraged other public and private institutions to play active roles in promoting environmental sustainability, expressing optimism that SIC Insurance’s initiative would inspire wider adoption of green technologies across the country.

According to him, the launch of the electric vehicles marks the beginning of a broader transformation strategy aimed at creating long-term value for customers while contributing to environmental protection and national development.

He reaffirmed that the company’s sustainability journey will continue through additional initiatives designed to strengthen SIC Insurance’s position not only as a leader in Ghana’s insurance industry but also as a responsible corporate organisation committed to advancing the country’s environmental and sustainable development goals.
