Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem continued its strong expansion in April 2026, with mobile money transactions reaching a total value of GH¢493.2 billion across 967 million transactions, according to the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana.

The latest figures reflect sustained growth in the adoption and use of digital financial services across the country and reinforce mobile money’s position as one of Ghana’s most important financial channels.

Compared with March 2026, transaction value increased from GH¢484.6 billion to GH¢493.2 billion, indicating continued momentum in digital payment activity among individuals, households and businesses.

The report also showed steady growth in customer enrolment within the mobile money ecosystem.

Registered mobile money accounts increased to 83 million in April 2026, up from 80.5 million recorded in December 2025.

Out of the total registered base, active mobile money accounts stood at 26 million, pointing to sustained engagement across the platform despite a large overall registration pool.

Agent network expansion also continued during the period under review.

Registered mobile money agents rose to 992,000, while active agents reached 534,000, reflecting ongoing investment in distribution channels and broader financial access across urban and rural communities.

Liquidity within the ecosystem strengthened further.

According to the central bank’s data, mobile money float balances increased to GH¢36.7 billion in April from GH¢35.4 billion in March, suggesting higher transaction capacity and stronger balances held to support customer activity.

Interoperability services also recorded notable growth.

Transactions conducted across interoperable payment platforms reached GH¢5.8 billion in value through 31.7 million transactions, underlining continued progress in enabling seamless transfers across financial institutions and mobile networks.

Beyond mobile money, other payment channels also maintained substantial transaction volumes.

Cheque clearing activity recorded GH¢36.6 billion from approximately 413,000 transactions during the month.

Automated Clearing House Direct Credit transactions reached GH¢13.5 billion across 816,000 transactions.

Meanwhile, instant payment services processed through Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) continued to accelerate.

Instant Pay transfers increased to GH¢79 billion in April, up from GH¢71.5 billion in March, with transaction volumes reaching nearly 19.9 million.

The latest data highlights the growing importance of digital financial services in Ghana’s economy and reflects changing consumer behaviour as more individuals and businesses increasingly adopt electronic payment channels for everyday transactions.

Analysts say the continued expansion of mobile money and interoperable payment systems is expected to deepen financial inclusion, improve transaction efficiency and support broader digital economic growth in the months ahead.
