MTN Ghana Ready for Nationwide SIM Registration Exercise – CEO Assures

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has reaffirmed the company’s readiness for the upcoming nationwide SIM registration exercise, describing it as a critical step toward strengthening national security and protecting telecom users.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the company’s 2026 Annual General Meeting at the University of Professional Studies, Accra on March 24, 2026, Mr. Blewett revealed that, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, recently engaged telecom operators to outline the roadmap for the exercise.

According to him, the Minister made it clear that the forthcoming registration drive represents the final phase of Ghana’s SIM re-registration process, highlighting government’s resolve to sanitise the telecommunications ecosystem.

Focus on Seamless Execution

Mr. Blewett noted that while industry players are aligned with the directive, the success of the exercise will largely depend on how effectively it is implemented.

He stressed that MTN Ghana is prioritising a smooth, efficient, and customer-friendly process that minimises inconvenience while ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements.

“The way we execute this is going to be very important, adding that the company is deploying the necessary systems, infrastructure, and operational measures to support a nationwide rollout,” he said.

He indicated that lessons from previous registration phases are being incorporated to improve efficiency, reduce congestion at service points, and enhance user experience.

Security at the Core

Beyond regulatory compliance, Mr. Blewett emphasised that the overarching objective of the exercise is to enhance both individual and national security.

“The end goal is the security of the individual and the country as a whole,” he stated.

The initiative is expected to play a key role in addressing issues such as mobile fraud, identity theft, and the misuse of unregistered SIM cards, which have posed significant risks within the digital ecosystem.

Government’s Broader Digital Agenda

The SIM registration exercise forms part of broader efforts by government to strengthen digital identity systems, improve accountability, and build trust within Ghana’s telecommunications sector.

It also aligns with ongoing initiatives aimed at deepening digital transformation and ensuring that technological advancements are supported by robust regulatory frameworks.

Industry and Economic Impact

Analysts believe that the successful completion of the final registration phase will significantly enhance confidence in mobile communications, while reducing criminal activities linked to anonymous SIM usage.

It is also expected to support the growth of digital financial services, including mobile money, by reinforcing user verification systems and improving transaction security.

With millions of subscribers expected to participate, stakeholders say the exercise will require strong coordination between telecom operators, regulators, and the public to achieve its intended outcomes.

MTN Ghana’s assurance of readiness signals a proactive approach by the industry leader, as the country prepares for what is expected to be a decisive phase in its digital and telecommunications regulatory journey.
