Cypress Opens Up on Struggles and Family Support

By Esther Korantemaa Offei

Ghanaian blogger Cypress has shared his personal journey into media, shedding light on the challenges of pursuing an unconventional path while seeking understanding from family.

In an interview on Highway 10.19 on ZED FM, Cypress revealed that his passion for blogging was largely unknown to those around him during his early years, including his mother.

“Honestly, nobody really knew what I was doing until I finished Senior High School,” he said. “My mom kept asking me, ‘Don’t you think you should find work to do?’”

The comment, though rooted in concern, reflects a common experience among many young people navigating career choices that fall outside traditional expectations. For Cypress, however, it became motivation rather than a setback.

After completing school, he found his breakthrough when he was employed by Bola Ray, marking the beginning of his professional journey in media.

“I think after school is when Bola employed me, and I stayed at Star FM for six years,” he explained. “That experience gave me the foundation I needed.”

Cypress also spoke fondly about his mother, describing her as naturally inquisitive, a trait that led to an unexpected discovery.

“One thing about my mom is that she’s very curious,” he said. “Funnily enough, she had saved ‘Cypress’ on her phone and was following the page, not knowing it was actually me.”

The moment of realization became a turning point in their relationship, transforming doubt into appreciation and understanding.

“She didn’t realise at first,” he added. “But when she finally did, it changed how she saw what I was doing.”

Despite the initial skepticism, Cypress has remained committed to his craft, emphasising persistence and self-belief.

“I haven’t stopped what I’m doing,” he said. “Now there’s more understanding, and that means everything to me.”

His story highlights a broader human experience, the desire to be seen, understood, and supported by loved ones while pursuing one’s passion against the odds.
