Students Urged to Start Building Entrepreneurial Skills from Day One

By Joyce Ayine

University students must begin developing entrepreneurial skills and seeking opportunities from the moment they enter campus, speakers on Next Gen Connect on Zed FM have advised.

Bryan Adosugbodzie, a Human Resource Management and Psychology student at the University of Ghana, highlighted that many students ignore emails from their universities offering entrepreneurial programs. “Most students are passive, it’s only when you get to level 300 or 400 that they start paying attention,” he said. He urged students to start early, explaining that building the right skills and credentials from admission increases their chances of qualifying for scholarships and other opportunities. Success, he stressed, depends on the individual’s readiness to act.

An Industrial Engineering student from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology added that students should engage with resources from their first year. “Some universities secure international grants and provide resources, experts, and mentorship to help students prepare for life after school. The key question is whether students are ready to tap into these opportunities,” he said.

Lois, a Computer Science student at Ashesi University, stated that most students enter university focused on passing courses and enjoying campus life, rather than creating revenue or building businesses. “If students cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset from the first year, by graduation they can fully leverage university opportunities, gain internships, and develop meaningful projects,” she said.

Speakers emphasized that many young people lack entrepreneurial knowledge to create lasting businesses. They encouraged students to explore internships beyond their field of study and take full advantage of the resources, mentorship, and grants available.

The discussion concluded that universities offer abundant opportunities, but initiative, consistency, and readiness are critical for students to transform them into practical entrepreneurial and career growth.
