Spotless Reflects on Creative Bond with Wizkid in Birth of ‘Soco’

By Esther Korantemaa Offei

The relationship between Nigerian Afrobeats artiste Spotless and Grammy-winning star Wizkid has come into fresh focus following revelations about how their collaboration produced the continental hit Soco.

Spotless, who arrived in Ghana earlier this week, opened up about their creative journey in an exclusive interview on Highway 10.19 on ZED FM, describing the song as a product of organic synergy and mutual trust in the studio.

“I started working with Wizkid in 2017. The first time he ever heard ‘Soco’ was from me. I actually sang the song initially,” Spotless disclosed.

According to him, their partnership was built on shared ideas and experimentation. As both a singer and producer, Spotless said he was creating what he called “Lagos vibes” during their sessions. At the time, the word “Soco” was not even intended to anchor the track.

“When we made the song together, ‘Soco’ wasn’t the hook. The hook was something different. I just sang ‘Soco’ at the beginning,” he explained.

He recounted that about a week after their initial recording, Wizkid invited him back to the studio to listen to a revised version of the track.

“He called me and said he had something for me to hear. When I got there, I heard ‘Soco’ on a completely different beat. It sounded incredible. He said, ‘Now we have to do this,’” Spotless said.

The artiste noted that he was unaware at the time that other musicians would later join the project, turning it into a major Afrobeats anthem that resonated across Nigeria and beyond.

“For me, it was a dream come true,” he added. “It really blew up the industry in Nigeria and Africa.”

Spotless described the success of Soco as a testament to collaboration, saying the chemistry between him and Wizkid transformed a simple studio idea into one of Afrobeats’ most defining records.
