Parliament Approves GH¢9.8bn GETFund Allocation to Boost Education in 2026

The Parliament of Ghana has approved a GH¢9.8 billion allocation for the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) for the 2026 fiscal year to support infrastructure development, scholarships, and key government education policies across the country.
Out of the total amount, GH¢4.2 billion has been earmarked to finance the Free Senior High School policy, reaffirming government’s commitment to sustaining access to secondary education. The allocation is expected to cover feeding grants, learning materials, and other operational costs under the programme.
The tertiary sub-sector will receive GH¢1.5 billion from the approved formula. Of this amount, GH¢300 million has been set aside for the GETFund scholarship scheme to support continuing students and provide new sponsorships for beneficiaries pursuing programmes in public tertiary institutions locally and abroad. The intervention is aimed at easing financial burdens on students and improving access to higher education.
Infrastructure development remains a major component of the 2026 formula. Parliament has approved GH¢230 million for the completion of ongoing basic school projects across the country, while GH¢310 million will fund the construction of new educational facilities. These projects are expected to improve classroom capacity, reduce overcrowding, and enhance the overall teaching and learning environment.
The GETFund continues to serve as a key financing mechanism for education development in Ghana. Established to mobilise resources primarily through a dedicated VAT levy, the Fund supports infrastructure expansion, facility rehabilitation, and student financial assistance across basic, secondary, and tertiary levels.
The approval of the 2026 allocation is expected to strengthen ongoing reforms in the education sector, address infrastructure deficits, and sustain flagship education programmes aimed at expanding access and improving quality nationwide.
