The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, has urged the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) to rescind its planned nationwide strike, emphasizing that government remains committed to dialogue to resolve outstanding issues over salary structures and conditions of service.
Addressing concerns raised by the association, Mr. Pelpuo stated, “Government is fully committed to engaging with CLOGSAG to address their concerns. Constructive discussions are ongoing, and we believe the issues can be resolved through negotiation rather than strike action.”
The Minister highlighted that continued collaboration between the government and the association is crucial to ensuring a positive outcome for all parties. He encouraged calm among union members while talks proceed, stressing that open dialogue remains the most effective way to address grievances.
Mr. Pelpuo noted that the government has already initiated structured engagement mechanisms with CLOGSAG to review salary structures, improve conditions of service, and explore sustainable solutions that will benefit civil and local government staff.
He added, “A strike is not in the interest of the workforce or the public. Through sustained engagement, we can reach a mutually beneficial resolution without disrupting essential services across the country.”
CLOGSAG had announced its intention to embark on industrial action to press for prompt adjustments to salaries and improved working conditions, citing delays in government responses to previous demands. The Labour Minister’s appeal comes as part of ongoing efforts to prevent escalation and maintain stability within the civil service sector.
Stakeholders in the public service sector have welcomed the government’s call for dialogue, noting that negotiation and compromise remain critical to maintaining operational continuity and protecting the welfare of both staff and the general public.
The appeal underscores the importance of cooperation between unions and government authorities, highlighting that sustained engagement can ensure that disputes are resolved efficiently while avoiding disruption to essential public services.
With continued discussions planned in the coming weeks, both parties remain optimistic that an amicable agreement can be reached without resorting to industrial action.
