Energy Minister Wins Global Recognition for Strengthening Power Reliability

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has been awarded the International Leadership Award by the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP), recognising his significant contributions to the country’s energy sector.
The award, presented by the SMRP Caribbean Chapter, highlights Dr. Jinapor’s efforts in strengthening maintenance practices, asset management and operational reliability across Ghana’s energy infrastructure.
The honour also reflects Dr. Jinapor’s influence beyond Ghana, promoting sustainability and professional standards across the African continent.
The recognition is seen as a symbol of the growing collaboration between Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago, where strategic advisory and investment support have helped Ghana develop its emerging oil and gas sector.
Under Dr. Jinapor’s leadership, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has prioritised preventive maintenance, workforce development, and performance monitoring.
These measures aim to reduce operational downtime, improve asset efficiency, and enhance safety across both state-owned and private energy facilities. Experts note that such initiatives are essential for stable electricity generation, reliable oil and gas operations, and long-term infrastructure resilience.
The partnership with Trinidad and Tobago serves as a model of South-South cooperation, enabling developing countries to share expertise, build technical capacity and advance energy transition goals without relying solely on traditional Western markets. This collaboration has provided Ghana with guidance in natural gas development and downstream processing, strengthening the country’s energy sector.
Dr. Jinapor’s work also aligns with Ghana’s broader green transition agenda, which seeks to balance renewable energy expansion with the reliable operation of existing thermal power plants.
Effective asset management reduces waste, prolongs the lifespan of equipment and minimises environmental risks, supporting the country’s commitment to sustainable development and energy security.
The International Leadership Award places Ghana within a global network of professionals dedicated to operational excellence. For Dr. Jinapor, it represents recognition of both personal leadership and institutional progress, reinforcing the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to modernise Ghana’s energy systems while promoting sustainability, efficiency and reliability.
