Vehicle registrations up 29.4% first five months of 2025

The nation’s transport sector is gaining strong traction, with new vehicle registrations soaring in the first five months of 2025.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s July 2025 Monetary Policy Report, the uptrend signals renewed economic confidence and a rebound in business and consumer activity.

Data from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) indicates that 20,202 vehicles were registered in May 2025 alone, representing a 24.5 per cent rise compared to 16,220 units recorded in the same month last year.

Cumulatively, registrations between January and May 2025 reached 108,542 units, up 29.4 per cent from 83,878 over the corresponding period in 2024.

According to analysts, the surge is due to improving household and corporate sentiment, coupled with easier access to auto financing. It also stems from renewed fleet expansion by logistics, ride-hailing, and commercial transport operators responding to rising demand for mobility and delivery services.

The transport sector’s rebound aligns with Ghana’s broader economic recovery plan, which prioritises logistics efficiency and improved connectivity to stimulate trade and investment.

“A growing vehicle stock is often a reflection of a more active economy,” an industry observer noted, adding that it also indicates expanding employment opportunities in the transport value chain.

However, the trend presents new challenges. Rising vehicle numbers could drive up fuel consumption, worsen congestion in urban centres, and intensify pressure on existing road infrastructure.

Already, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have begun adjusting prices upward in line with projections for the first pricing window of October 2025, a development that could affect transport fares and logistics costs.
