Gov’t Reaffirms Commitment to Specialist Healthcare

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to strengthening specialist healthcare delivery in Ghana, following high-level engagements with the leadership of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

In a post shared on Saturday, January 31, the Vice President said the meeting, led by the College’s President, Prof. Afua Hesse, focused on reviewing ongoing initiatives and upcoming programmes aimed at expanding access to specialist medical care across the country, particularly in underserved communities.

A major highlight of the discussions was preparations towards a large-scale volunteer medical outreach expected to attract between 1,500 and 2,000 medical professionals. The outreach will provide free specialist medical services to patients nationwide and is anticipated to significantly improve access to quality healthcare for vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations.

The meeting also examined plans to relaunch the College’s Endowment Fund, which is expected to be activated across participating countries during an upcoming gala event. According to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the fund will play a critical role in supporting the training of specialist doctors in Ghana and the wider sub-region, strengthening long-term capacity building and sustainability within the healthcare system.

In addition, discussions centred on proposals to establish a medical simulation centre, a move intended to enhance specialist training, improve clinical competence, and ensure Ghana remains competitive within the global medical education and training landscape.

Commending the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons for its sustained commitment to issues that directly impact the health and well-being of Ghanaians, the Vice President praised the quality of specialist training being delivered. However, she stressed the need for continuous improvement to address existing gaps in healthcare delivery and meet the growing demands of the population.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasised the importance of expanding healthcare access through multiple service delivery channels and called for stronger collaboration among health institutions to improve patient outcomes nationwide.

She further reaffirmed the government’s recognition of the critical role specialist training plays in building a resilient and responsive healthcare system, urging sustained partnerships with professional bodies to ensure Ghana keeps pace with global standards while delivering improved and equitable healthcare for its people.
