Stock Market Composite Index Nears 9,000 Points

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded a modest but encouraging performance on Wednesday, January 28, as selective buying interest in a few key counters lifted market indices, pushing the benchmark Composite Index closer to the psychologically important 9,000-point mark.
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) advanced by 12.88 points to close at 8,997.05 points, reflecting cautious optimism among investors. This performance nudged the market’s year-to-date return to 2.59%, reinforcing a gradual recovery in equities sentiment at the start of the year. Total market capitalisation rose marginally to GH¢178.7 billion, underscoring the steady accumulation of value despite limited broad-based participation.
Trading activity improved notably compared to earlier sessions in the week. A total of 30.55 million shares were traded, with a market value of GH¢121.22 million, making it the most active trading day so far this week. The uptick in volumes suggests renewed interest from both institutional and retail investors, albeit concentrated in a narrow group of stocks.
The Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also posted gains, rising by 17.37 points to close at 4,919.91 points. The performance of the financial sub-sector was largely driven by increased activity in selected banking and insurance stocks, reflecting improved sentiment toward the sector amid easing interest rates and expectations of stronger earnings prospects.
In terms of price movers, Benso Palm Plantation PLC (BOPP) emerged as one of the standout performers, gaining GH¢0.04 to close at GH¢62.60. Cal Bank PLC recorded a similar upward movement, ending the session at GH¢0.76 after a modest price increase. Ecobank Ghana PLC also edged higher, adding GH¢0.04 to settle at GH¢28.93, while Enterprise Group PLC gained GH¢0.01 to close at GH¢3.54. Together, these stocks accounted for most of the day’s gains, highlighting the market’s selective nature.
On the downside, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC was the sole notable decliner among actively traded stocks, shedding GH¢0.03 to close at GH¢40.20, slightly tempering overall market gains.
Overall, Wednesday’s session was characterised by selective optimism rather than broad market exuberance. Investor interest remained focused on a few fundamentally strong and liquid counters, while the wider market adopted a cautious, wait-and-see stance amid ongoing assessment of macroeconomic signals and company-specific developments.
As trading continues through the rest of the week, the GSE appears positioned for continued selective activity, offering pockets of opportunity for investors willing to navigate a market defined more by discernment than widespread momentum.
