Gold Extends Record Rally Above $5,500

Gold prices surged beyond the $5,500-per-ounce mark on Thursday, extending a historic rally as a confluence of dollar weakness, policy uncertainty in the United States, and rising geopolitical tensions reinforced the metal’s status as the world’s premier safe-haven asset.
The rally gathered pace after the US dollar slid to its weakest level in nearly four years, a move that was further underlined by comments from President Donald Trump, who appeared to downplay the currency’s decline. His remarks signalled a tolerance for a softer dollar, even as his administration continues to threaten new tariffs and renew criticism of the Federal Reserve’s independence. For investors, the signals have heightened concerns about US policy coherence, long-term fiscal sustainability and currency stability, driving demand for hard assets such as gold.
Adding to market uncertainty, the US Federal Reserve held interest rates steady at its latest policy meeting, a decision widely anticipated by markets. While the central bank pointed to resilient economic activity and early signs of stabilisation in the labour market, it also acknowledged that inflation remains elevated and that the outlook is clouded by multiple risks. Notably, two Federal Open Market Committee members dissented, voting in favour of an immediate rate cut, keeping expectations of monetary easing later in the year firmly alive. Lower interest rate expectations typically support gold, which offers no yield but becomes more attractive when borrowing costs decline.
Geopolitical developments also provided strong support for bullion prices. Fresh US warnings of potential military action against Iran, coupled with statements that a large American naval force in the region is prepared to respond “with speed and violence, if necessary,” have significantly raised global risk aversion. Such rhetoric has unsettled financial markets and reinforced gold’s appeal as a hedge against geopolitical shocks.
Beyond short-term catalysts, gold continues to benefit from deeper structural forces. Persistent fiscal concerns in major economies, sustained purchases by central banks seeking to diversify reserves, and steady inflows into gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) all point to robust institutional and sovereign demand.
With currency pressures, geopolitical risks and policy uncertainty converging, analysts say gold’s record-breaking rally is increasingly underpinned by both macroeconomic fundamentals and long-term strategic considerations, suggesting that investor appetite for the precious metal remains firmly intact.
