IMF Approves Final Review of Zambia’s Lending Program

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the sixth and final review of Zambia’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF), unlocking $190 million for the Southern African nation. This marks the conclusion of a program that began in 2022 when Lusaka sought financial support to stabilize its economy and avoid debt default.

Initially, Zambia requested $1.3 billion in financing from the IMF, which was later revised upward to $1.7 billion. The program was designed to provide critical relief to the country as it grappled with mounting debt and economic challenges. However, Zambia later withdrew a request for an additional $145 million loan extension, signaling a shift in strategy. Instead, the government announced it would rely more heavily on domestic revenues, local markets, and partnerships with other development partners to close any remaining financial gaps.

The IMF’s final disbursement comes at a crucial time, with Zambia facing double digit inflation ahead of the August general election. Rising prices have placed significant pressure on households and businesses, underscoring the importance of fiscal discipline and sound economic management. Despite these challenges, the government remains optimistic about the country’s medium term outlook. Officials project that by 2026, Zambia’s budget deficit will be reduced by more than half, while economic growth is expected to exceed six percent.

The IMF’s endorsement of Zambia’s program reflects confidence in the government’s commitment to reforms and fiscal consolidation. Analysts note that the conclusion of the ECF arrangement provides Zambia with an opportunity to strengthen its economic resilience, attract investment, and rebuild credibility in international markets. The focus now shifts to sustaining progress without external lifelines, ensuring that domestic resource mobilization and prudent financial management remain at the core of the country’s development agenda.

The Fund’s sixth and final review of Zambia’s program is scheduled to go before the IMF board at the end of this month. Once approved, the disbursement will close a chapter in Zambia’s economic recovery efforts, while opening a new phase where the country must rely more on its own revenues and policy discipline to navigate future challenges.

This milestone underscores both the achievements and the hurdles that remain for Zambia as it works to stabilize its economy, reduce inflation, and deliver sustainable growth for its citizens.
