The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced the introduction of an SMS notification system to alert motorists when their driver’s licences are due for renewal, as part of measures to improve compliance and efficiency.
Speaking to the media, the Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey, said the new system will ensure that drivers receive timely reminders ahead of their licence expiration dates.
“We have introduced the SMS notification system where people are now being informed when their licence expiration is due,” he said.
He further disclosed that the Authority will, this year, begin implementing a new policy that links the expiry date of a driver’s licence to the holder’s date of birth.
“This year, we are starting a project where licence expiration will be determined by your date of birth. Your date of birth will be the day your licence will be expiring,” he explained.
According to Mr. Kotey, under the new arrangement, a driver’s licence will expire on the individual’s birthday, making it easier for motorists to remember when renewal is due.
He said the initiative is expected to simplify the renewal process and reduce the number of motorists driving with expired licences.
Mr. Kotey noted that the DVLA is ready to roll out the policy and urged the public to take note of the changes and comply accordingly.
He added that drivers will receive SMS notifications indicating the exact date they are expected to renew their licences, encouraging them to act promptly and stay roadworthy.
