Former Sports Minister Hails Daniel Laryea as Best Referee at 2025 AFCON
Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has heaped praise on Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea, describing him as the standout official at the just-ended 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Laryea drew widespread attention during the tournament, particularly for his performance in the semi-final encounter between Nigeria and host nation Morocco. His officiating in that match sparked controversy, with the Nigerian camp expressing dissatisfaction following their penalty shootout defeat to the hosts.
Despite the criticism, Mr Vanderpuye said he was impressed by Laryea’s display and believes the referee deserves consideration for officiating at the FIFA World Cup.
“I am so proud as a Ghanaian because one Ghanaian in the middle distinguished himself so well,” he noted.
“The referee was excellent, and I am sure FIFA would be considering him for the World Cup.
“Of all the matches that I watched at the AFCON, I can say, not because I am biased as a Ghanaian, that he was the best.
“His composure and positioning were outstanding. I will give him 95 per cent.”
Beyond the semi-final, Laryea also officiated a Group Stage match between Algeria and Burkina Faso and served as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the quarter-final clash between Morocco and Cameroon.
The Ghanaian referee has since returned home and is expected to take charge of upcoming Ghana Premier League fixtures.
