Our Aim is to win the WAFCON – Kurt Okraku

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has declared that the Black Queens will head into the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a clear ambition to win the trophy.
The Queens learned their fate at Thursday’s draw for the tournament, which will be staged in Morocco, as they were placed in Group D alongside Cameroon, Mali and Cape Verde.
Ghana go into the competition on the back of an impressive showing at the last edition, where Kim Lars Björkegren’s side finished third after defeating South Africa on penalties to secure the bronze medal. That performance, Okraku believes, has set the tone for an even stronger push in 2026.
“The ambition of the nation is to win the trophy [WAFCON], and I think we are not far away from that. On the back of finishing third at the last WAFCON, Ghana should be ready to face any opponent. If you want to become champions, you must be able to compete against any team on the African continent,” Okraku said.
While their ultimate target is a maiden continental title, the Black Queens will also be eyeing a semi-final finish, which would guarantee automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Ghana last featured at the World Cup in 2007.
The 2026 WAFCON is scheduled to kick off on March 17, with the final set for April 3.
