Sarkodie Attributes Rise to Obrafour’s Co-Sign

Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has credited a collaboration with legendary hiplife icon Obrafour as a defining milestone in his career, saying the experience provided him with the industry validation he needed at a crucial stage of his journey.
Speaking on Daybreak Hitz, Sarkodie reflected on the early days of his rise and the importance of established artistes opening doors for younger talents. He described Obrafour as one of the few senior musicians who recognised his potential early and was willing to publicly associate with him, a move that significantly boosted his credibility within the industry.
According to Sarkodie, endorsements from respected figures can change the course of a young artiste’s career. He explained that although he was already working hard to build a fan base, Obrafour’s decision to collaborate with him served as a powerful signal to the public and industry stakeholders. “At that stage, I needed people who believed in me,” Sarkodie noted, adding that when a highly respected name backs you, it tells everyone that you are worth paying attention to. He said that single gesture played a major role in shaping his career and remains something he does not take for granted.
The rapper said this experience has influenced his own attitude toward upcoming artistes. He revealed that he finds genuine fulfillment in identifying talent and watching creatives transform their dreams into tangible success. Sarkodie explained that having personally experienced the transition from the streets to mainstream recognition, he understands how meaningful such opportunities can be.
“It’s always special seeing people make it,” he said, explaining that moments such as hearing one’s song on radio for the first time, traveling for shows, or winning awards are life-changing. For him, those experiences represent the point where dreams begin to feel real, and he wishes more young artistes could enjoy that journey.
Sarkodie also acknowledged the changing landscape of music promotion, pointing out the contrast between his generation and the current crop of artistes. While his era depended heavily on groundwork and physical engagement, he noted that social media now plays a central role. He, however, called for a healthy balance, urging younger artistes to combine digital strategies with solid foundational work.
He further encouraged upcoming musicians to remain resilient, even in the face of setbacks. According to Sarkodie, failure is part of the process, but persistence and belief are essential. Expressing optimism about the future, he said Ghana’s music industry is steadily evolving and that greater achievements lie ahead.
“The progress is already visible,” he said, adding that each generation improves upon the last. “With time, Ghana is going to show the world something truly special.”
