Ghanaian Music is Integral to Afrobeats – AFROFUTURE CEO

Ghanaian music, the heartbeat of Afrobeats, is asserting its influence on the global stage, according to Abdul Karim, CEO of AFROFUTURE. Speaking on Culture Daily, Karim highlighted the growth of the festival and its role in shaping Ghana’s creative economy, stressing that the country cannot be sidelined in the worldwide Afrobeats narrative.

AFROFUTURE, which has rapidly grown in popularity, has seen its attendance triple over recent years. “We grew from 4,000 people to 12,000 people,” Karim revealed, pointing to rising global interest in Ghana’s cultural experiences and the impact of deliberate, well-curated programming.

A key milestone for this year’s festival, Karim explained, is the emergence of strong local sponsorship. For the first time since the festival’s inception, local brands are fully backing the event. “This is the first year that local sponsorship is carrying the show. We’ve never had that,” he said, calling it a turning point for confidence in Ghana’s creative industry.

Beyond staging performances, AFROFUTURE is driving conversations to strengthen the industry. Karim highlighted plans for a music roundtable, bringing together executives to tackle structural challenges and shape a self-sustaining music ecosystem. He emphasized the importance of reclaiming Ghana’s visibility in Afrobeats, noting, “Ghanaian music led the Afrobeats story. I feel like we’re being written out, and that’s a problem we must address.”

Inclusivity remains central to AFROFUTURE’s mission. Karim explained that the festival is “for everybody that can buy a ticket or is willing to buy a ticket,” reflecting its community-driven approach designed to welcome diverse audiences.

Looking ahead, Karim stressed the need for collective effort across the continent. “Where Africa is going, we need to compound our efforts and create impact,” he stated, framing AFROFUTURE not merely as a festival but as a movement aimed at shaping the future of African culture.

With rising attendance, strong local support, and initiatives aimed at ecosystem-building, AFROFUTURE is positioning itself as a key platform to showcase Ghanaian culture and music on the global stage, ensuring the country retains its rightful place in the Afrobeats story.
