GSE Indices Inch Up as Market Opens Week on Positive Note

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) opened the new trading week with modest but encouraging gains across its key indices, reflecting steady investor confidence amid mixed performance from individual equities. The positive movement reinforces the GSE’s strong year-to-date momentum, particularly within the financial sector.

At the close of Monday’s trading session, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) advanced by 7.86 points, reaching 8,630.50. The Composite Index, which measures the performance of all listed companies, continues to show remarkable resilience, supported by consistent activity across multiple sectors. The Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also recorded a gain of 10.81 points to settle at 4,498.66, underscoring renewed interest in financial sector equities.

As a result of these gains, the GSE’s total market capitalization stood at GH¢167.91 billion, highlighting the market’s sustained recovery and growing investor appetite for local equities.

Trading activity for the day was relatively healthy, with 616,052 shares exchanged at a total market value of approximately GH¢1.23 million. Analysts note that while overall volumes were moderate, the participation level suggests continued market engagement, particularly at the start of the week when investors typically reassess their positions.

Among the key performers, GCB Bank Plc (GCB) emerged as the standout gainer. The bank’s share price rose by GH¢0.40, closing at GH¢19.50 per share. Although only 786 shares valued at around GH¢15,213 changed hands, the upward price movement demonstrates how even relatively small volumes can influence price direction in a market with limited free float for certain stocks.

However, the gains were not universal. Societe Generale Ghana Plc (SOGEGH) slipped marginally by GH¢0.01 to close at GH¢4.49, reflecting mild investor caution within the banking sub-segment. Similarly, NewGold (GLD), the gold-backed exchange-traded fund, fell by GH¢0.35 to GH¢449.00, mirroring movements in global commodity markets and investor rotation toward other asset classes.

While the market posted a positive start to the week, analysts emphasise that day-to-day fluctuations remain common, depending on trading volumes, corporate announcements, and broader economic indicators. Still, the market’s overall trajectory remains strong. Year-to-date, the GSE-CI has surged by 76.55%, while the GSE-FSI has risen by 88.96%, making the Ghana Stock Exchange one of Africa’s best-performing markets this year.

Market watchers expect the week to maintain its momentum as investors continue to seek value, particularly within the financial and banking sector counters that have shown consistent strength.
