SSNIT Introduces Annual Pensioner Certificate Renewal from January 2026

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) will from 1 January 2026 begin implementing a mandatory annual certificate renewal for all pensioners, as part of efforts to strengthen its verification system and ensure the accuracy and integrity of pension payments.
Under the new policy, every pensioner will be required to complete a once-a-year certification process, specifically during their month of birth. SSNIT says this step is essential to maintaining uninterrupted monthly pension payments and preventing the disbursement of benefits to ineligible individuals. The Trust emphasised that the initiative forms part of a broader program aimed at enhancing data accuracy, operational efficiency, and the long-term sustainability of the pension scheme.
To make the process accessible to all, SSNIT has provided two primary channels for certificate renewal. Pensioners can either use the facial verification feature on the SSNIT Mobile App or complete biometric verification at any SSNIT branch. These options are designed to offer convenience while ensuring the robustness of the verification process.
The Trust has also made special provisions for pensioners who may face difficulties with the standard procedures. Non-resident pensioners may renew digitally through the mobile app or by submitting a Fingerprint ID Form. Pensioners with mobility challenges will be supported through home verification services, ensuring that the new policy does not disadvantage the elderly or vulnerable. Those without smartphones or access to digital platforms will still be able to complete their renewal physically at a branch.
To help pensioners comply with the new requirement, SSNIT will issue reminders two months before the pensioner’s birth month through SMS, email, or other approved communication channels. These reminders, the Trust says, are intended to reduce the likelihood of missed deadlines and ensure a smooth transition into the new system.
However, SSNIT cautioned that pension payments will be temporarily suspended if a pensioner fails to renew their certificate within the required window. Payments will resume once the renewal is completed.
The Trust encouraged pensioners who require additional assistance or information to contact the SSNIT Contact Centre, visit any branch nationwide, or use the SSNIT Mobile App for guidance. The implementation of this annual renewal system marks a significant step in modernising pension administration and safeguarding the scheme for current and future retirees.
