GSE Ends Week Higher as Composite Index Gains 23 Points, Market Cap Surges

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed the week ending Thursday, December 4, 2025, on a strong and optimistic note, buoyed by heightened investor participation, renewed market resilience, and gains recorded across both the broader market and key financial stocks.

Market activity throughout the week reflected a healthy combination of active trading, targeted profit-taking, and sustained investor confidence, an indication that the equity market continues to maintain its momentum as one of the standout performers in 2025.

Weekly Trading Overview

Trading volumes and values witnessed notable fluctuations during the week, driven by a mix of market sentiment, sector-specific interest, and broader economic expectations.

On Monday, December 1, a total of 1,266,274 shares were exchanged at a value of GH¢1,416,884.47, with the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) standing firmly at 8,610.70 points, setting a solid start for the week.

Activity surged on Tuesday, December 2, with 3,766,520 shares traded, valued at GH¢2,879,737.48, pushing the GSE-CI slightly upward to 8,611.87 points as investors took stronger positions, particularly in high-performing counters.

Midweek trading on Wednesday, December 3, saw 2,175,865 shares exchanged, worth GH¢3,064,256.48. Despite strong activity, the GSE-CI dipped to 8,599.03 points, reflecting selective profit-taking from investors who capitalised on earlier gains.

By Thursday, December 4, the market closed with a relatively lower volume of 430,781 shares valued at GH¢1,016,929.80. However, the GSE-CI rebounded significantly to 8,622.64 points, showcasing market resilience, renewed optimism, and increasing demand for select equities ahead of the year’s close.

Market Capitalization Movements

Market capitalization, which tracks the total value of all listed equities, also saw significant shifts.

It began the week at GH¢166,491.36 million on Monday, edged slightly upward to GH¢166,505.88 million on Tuesday, then dipped to GH¢166,181.00 million on Wednesday as investors locked in profits.

However, by Thursday, market capitalization surged impressively to GH¢167,810.50 million, marking one of the strongest weekly increases and signalling the growing confidence investors continue to place in Ghana’s equity market.

Stock Indices Performance

The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI), which measures overall market performance, gained 23.61 points between Wednesday and Thursday, rising from 8,599.03 to 8,622.64.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) tracking banks, insurers, and other financial institutions, also posted strong gains, adding 32.44 points to close the week at 4,487.85.

These increases contributed to remarkable year-to-date advances of 76.39% for the GSE-CI and an exceptional 88.50% for the GSE-FSI, reinforcing Ghana’s position as one of Africa’s top-performing markets in 2025.

Overall, the week ending December 4, 2025, was characterized by steady trading, strong recoveries, and upward momentum across major indices. Market capitalization expanded sharply, reflecting deepening investor confidence.

With year-to-date gains exceeding 76% for the GSE-CI and 88% for the GSE-FSI, 2025 remains a record-setting year for the Ghana Stock Exchange, offering both seasoned investors and new entrants strong opportunities to participate in the ongoing growth and dynamism of the country’s equity market.
