Otto Addo justifies defensive strategy against Mali
Otto Addo, Head Coach of the Black Stars, has credited his defensive strategy for Ghana’s crucial 2-1 victory over Mali, boosting their chances of securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match, held on Thursday evening, saw Ghana increase their points in Group I, moving them closer to qualification.
Addo’s tactical plan included a solid backline with Alexander Djiku, Mohammed Salisu, Alidu Seidu, Tariq Lamptey, and Gideon Mensah, forming a formidable defense.
This back-five setup aimed to provide width while maintaining strength in the midfield.
In a post-match interview, the 48-year-old coach explained, “For me, it was very difficult to play fully attack because Mali is a good team, and it’s very hot here. I had to see how the game went and then decide whether to put in more offensive or defensive players.”
He acknowledged the challenging nature of the game, marked by relentless pressing from the Malians.
Addo also praised his substitutes, who significantly impacted the game, leading to the winning goal. “Every game has different demands, and for this game, I chose this system. In the next game, maybe I will choose something else. We will look firm against Central African Republic, and it is going to be tougher because now everyone expects us to win,” he stated.
Ghana’s goals came from Ernest Nuamah and substitute Jordan Ayew, who stepped up to secure the victory.
The team currently sits second in Group I with six points and is set to face the Central African Republic on Monday, June 10, 2024.
