Choosing continuity: Samson Deen retains the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC) seat

African Paralympic Committee (AfPC) president Samson Deen retains his seat for the next four years with a resounding endorsement. Deen secured 38 of the 40 votes on Sunday evening at the AfPC General Assembly meeting held at the Marriott Hotel in Accra, Ghana, from 7 to 9 November 2025.
Deen, who won the presidency in 2021 with 24 votes to succeed Angola’s Leonel da Rocha Pinto, has distinguished himself over the past few years with initiatives such as the inaugural African Para Games in Accra in 2023 and the establishment of a permanent AfPC secretariat. The Games marked a significant step for para‑sports across the continent and raised the AfPC’s profile through various awareness campaigns.
After the near‑unanimous vote, Deen was seen slapping his hands together and thanking the delegates. “Thank you, Africa. This huge endorsement means a lot to me,” he said.
The three‑day General Assembly brought together representatives from more than 40 National Paralympic Committees and 20 international observers. Speaking at the event, Deen emphasized the importance of unity: “The purpose is to come together, strengthen our bonds, and think positively about how we can develop our sport.” He added, “So far, it has been a successful assembly, with 42 National Paralympic Committees and 20 international observers here to help shape the future of our region.”
The assembly also recognized the contributions of the AfPC Executive Board members, awarding those who have played a pivotal role in advancing Paralympic sport across Africa. With four more years in office, Deen is expected to lead further inclusion initiatives, promote disability‑friendly environments, and engage with governments in the sub‑region to drive development and improve member welfare.
Among the Ghanaian dignitaries who attended the event were Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah; Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams; National Sports Authority Director‑General Yaw Ampofo‑Ankrah; and World Armwrestling Vice President Charles Osei Asibey.
