Vice-President pledges gov’t’s support to complete Legacy of Hope hospital

The Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has pledged to work with the Catholic Church to complete its Legacy of Hope Paediatric and Childhood Cancer Hospital, which is under construction at Adjen Kotoku in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking at the Closing Mass of the 2025 Rosary Congress in Accra on Saturday, 18 October 2025, the Vice-President said government welcomes faith-based initiatives that contribute to national development.

“Government will work with the Catholic Church because the request to complete the Legacy of Hope project is not for personal gain but for the national interest,” Professor Opoku-Agyemang said.

The Vice-President gave the assurance following an appeal by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, C.S.Sp, for the completion of the hospital project.

The Archbishop explained that the Legacy of Hope Paediatric and Childhood Cancer Hospital is designed to provide critical healthcare for children across Ghana and beyond, irrespective of religion or cultural background.

He said the hospital represents a beacon of hope and compassion for children battling cancer and other complex medical conditions, adding that it stands as a testament to the Church’s commitment to human dignity and public welfare.

When completed, the facility will include an Outpatient Department (OPD), theatre, radiology unit, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), pharmacy, medical block, maternity ward, and a special accommodation unit.

Initially planned for a site at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, the hospital location was moved to Adjen Kotoku in 2023 due to contractual obligations.

Archbishop Kwofie, who launched the initiative with a sod-cutting ceremony in January 2022, confirmed that due diligence had been completed for the new site on land owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra.
