NAIMOS arrests 28 men for illegal mining in Cape Three Points forest reserve

The NAIMOS Task Force has arrested 28 young men in an anti-illegal mining operation in the Cape Three Points Forest Reserve, Western Region.

The arrests followed intelligence reports of ongoing environmental destruction within the reserve.

The NAIMOS Task Force launched a sweeping 50-kilometre patrol through dense vegetation and muddy terrain, targeting illegal miners whose activities had caused severe damage to parts of the forest

While some suspects fled, 28 Ghanaian nationals were apprehended and several items were seized.

During the operation, makeshift shelters were dismantled and an excavator found deep within the reserve was disabled to prevent further use.

Items confiscated included seven water pumping machines, sixteen shovels, one pickaxe, seventeen wraps of Indian hemp, seven torchlights, twelve mobile phones, three mini bottles of mercury, GHS150 in cash, assorted malaria medication and sachets of Alomo Bitters.

All suspects and seized items were handed over to the Agona-Nkwanta District Police for prosecution.
