Mahama launches Bright Amusement Park project, pledges open-door investment policy

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to maintaining an open-door policy for both local and foreign investors, as Ghana embarks on one of its most ambitious tourism ventures: the USD300 million Bright International Amusement Park.

The project, spearheaded by Chinese investors under the GreenHouse Group, is expected to transform Ghana’s leisure and hospitality landscape, positioning the country as a major tourism destination in West Africa.

Speaking at the project’s launch ceremony, President Mahama emphasised that his administration remains dedicated to building a business-friendly environment to attract sustained investment.

“We are carrying out the reforms that will make Ghana the most attractive destination for investment. All the macro indicators are looking well. Inflation is falling sharply, the economy has stabilised, business confidence is going up, and our currency is relatively stable compared to the past,” he said.

President Mahama assured investors, particularly those from China, that Ghana would continue to protect their interests and facilitate smooth operations.

“I can assure you that we’ll have an open door to support businesspeople who come and invest, including our Chinese businessmen. We’ll make it easy for you to transact your foreign exchange and repatriate your profits. We’re going to make the tax system simple and ensure that your investments are protected,” he noted.

President Mahama also revealed that his government is in active negotiations with the United States to resolve trade-related challenges, including the 15 per cent “Trump Tariff” imposed on Ghanaian exports.

“Currently, negotiations are ongoing with the United States about the 15 per cent tariff that is slapped on Ghana. We’re also negotiating a restoration of the zero per cent AGOA policy. If that happens, we can attract more Asian and Chinese businesses to produce here for export into the American market,” he explained.

Upon completion, the amusement park is expected to feature a five-star leisure resort hotel with 160 rooms, 20 presidential villas, a 5,000-capacity international conference and exhibition centre, a 160,000-square-metre water park, 500 luxury golf villas, an artificial beach, waterfront restaurants and sightseeing yachts.

President Mahama described the initiative as a landmark project that would boost domestic tourism, create thousands of jobs and provide a much-needed family recreation hub.

“Most middle-class families in Accra and other parts of Ghana do not have anywhere they can go to enjoy time with their children and spouses. When this amusement park is open, it will create an avenue where, at weekends and on holidays, all Ghanaians can come here,” he indicated.

He highlighted that the facility would also draw regional tourists.

“The hotel will attract our cousins from Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso. Instead of going to Europe for holidays, they can come to Ghana and enjoy this world-class amusement park and resort,” he emphasised.

The inclusion of a modern convention centre, he said, would enhance Ghana’s capacity to host major international conferences and exhibitions, further diversifying the tourism sector’s revenue base.
