GTEC reaffirms commitment to quality tertiary education
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with tertiary institutions to ensure compliance with regulations while delivering quality education.
This commitment was made at the 22nd Biennial Conference of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) on September 30, 2025, themed “Rethinking Higher Education Pedagogy and Funding in the Age of AI: Ethics, Equity, and Development Impact.”
GTEC’s Director-General, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, asserted that the Commission balances regulatory enforcement with supporting academic excellence, describing GTEC’s role as collaborative, aiming to uphold fairness and compliance while helping institutions improve educational quality.
“GTEC is mandated to function as a collaborative agency in tertiary education delivery. Our approach is to be fair, ensuring compliance with the law while also supporting institutions to enhance the quality of education they provide,” Prof. Abdulai explained.
Professor Abdulai also noted the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in tertiary education, noting its potential benefits alongside ethical concerns.
He urged vigilance from stakeholders like UTAG to promote responsible AI use and address misuse risks.
“At this point, AI has a critical role to play in tertiary education delivery. However, it comes with challenges, particularly regarding unethical use. These risks can be addressed when key stakeholders, especially UTAG, remain vigilant and promote responsible use,” Prof Abdulai said.
The conference brought together education leaders to explore innovative strategies for sustaining higher education amid technological advancements and funding challenges.
