Education Ministry to roll out subject-specific AI apps for SHS teaching

The Ministry of Education has announced plans to roll out Subject-Specific Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications for Senior High Schools (SHS) to enhance teaching and learning of the new SHS curriculum.
The initiative, designed to support more than 68,000 teachers in delivering lessons to over 1.4 million learners, seeks to strengthen curriculum delivery while safeguarding Ghana’s ethical and cultural values.
The AI-powered apps were jointly developed by the Ghana Education Service (GES), the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), the National Teaching Council (NTC), the National School Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA), and the Centre for National Distance Learning and Open Schooling (CENDLOS).
The project also received input from Playlab AI, with technical support from Transforming Teaching, Education, and Learning (T-TEL) and the Mastercard Foundation.
In a statement issued on October 1, the Ministry explained that the apps were built using Ghana’s official curriculum materials, including teacher manuals, learner resources, and frameworks promoting national values, gender equality, and social inclusion.
The Ministry further noted that the subject-based AI applications will enable teachers to plan lessons more effectively, conduct assessments with ease, and provide learners with interactive, personalised resources.
“The introduction of these AI-based tools will play a critical role in bridging gaps in teaching, strengthening curriculum delivery, and equipping both teachers and students with innovative resources to achieve quality learning outcomes,” the statement added.
