FIFA U20 Women’s qualifiers: Black Princesses to face ruthless South Africa in 2026
Ghana’s U20 women’s national team, the Black Princesses, will face South Africa in the third round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers after dismantling Tunisia.
The Black Princesses progressed to the next stage after beating Tunisia 2-0 in Accra on Sunday to win the tie 4-0 on aggregate.
The team, hoping to make it eight straight World Cup appearances, will face a stern test in South Africa, which reached the third round after thrashing Eswatini 4-0 in Johannesburg on Saturday. South Africa’s U20 women’s team recorded a 9-0 aggregate victory over their opponents.
The winner of the game between Ghana and South Africa will advance to the fourth and final round of qualifiers, where they will face the victors from the match between Uganda and Zambia.
Meanwhile, the coach of the Black Princesses, Charles Sampson, has turned his attention to the match against South Africa and remains confident of victory, with the World Cup his main objective.
“Our goal is to qualify for the World Cup, but our intention is to go step by step. Now that we are done with Tunisia, our next focus turns to the next match, which is against South Africa,” he said after the game.
“I have already watched them in the first leg against Eswatini, where they scored five goals. I have an idea of their team. We are up to the task. Our aim is to go to the World Cup, so any opponent we get, we will study them and work towards how we can outdo them,” he added.
The West Africans have qualified for the women’s U20 World Cup seven times in a row but are yet to advance beyond the group stage
