Vice-President hails UDS after World Cup triumph

Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has congratulated the University for Development Studies (UDS) for winning the University World Cup in China, describing the achievement as a proud moment for Ghana.

In a message shared on X, formerly Twitter, the Vice-President praised the team’s resilience, teamwork and determination, stating that their victory had lifted Ghana to the pinnacle of global university football.

“After a spirited journey, players from Ghana’s University for Development Studies (UDS) have been crowned Champions of the University World Cup in China.

“Your determination, teamwork and resilience have lifted Ghana to the pinnacle of global university football. This victory is a triumph for UDS and the entire nation,” she wrote.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the team’s success had inspired young people nationwide and written a new chapter in Ghana’s sporting history.

“Know that you have written your names in history and inspired young people across Ghana and beyond. Congratulations,” she added.

UDS secured a dramatic 2–1 win over Brazil’s Paulista University in the final on Sunday. The match began with an early goal from Gabriel Viera in the opening 30 seconds, but UDS fought back, with captain Mohammed Sulemana equalising in injury time before sealing the win.

The tournament brought together top university teams from around the world. UDS’s victory has sparked celebrations across Ghana and drawn praise from the wider African continent.
