Two jailed for tramadol trafficking in North East Region

The Nalerigu Circuit Court has sentenced two men to ten years in prison each for unlawful possession of restricted drugs following a major tramadol bust in the North East Region.
Mumuni Iddrisu and Alhassan Braimah were arrested on 18 September 2025 at Gbintiri near Nalerigu after a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Commission intercepted 1,195 boxes of tramadol hydrochloride 120mg, commonly known as Red.
Investigations revealed that the two had concealed 100 boxes of tramadol and more than 4,500 packs of the drug inside 25 five-litre yellow gallons.
They reappeared in court on 26 September and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of restricted drugs without lawful authority.
Four other suspects, Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Yakubu and Moses Ayorik, were discharged after investigators found no evidence linking them to the drugs.
Presiding judge Justice Francis Asobayire handed down 10-year prison sentences to each of the convicted men on both counts.
They were also fined 5,000 penalty units each, equivalent to GHS60,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional 10-year custodial sentence.
The convicts have been transferred to the Gambaga local prison to begin serving their sentences.
The Ghana Police Service commended residents of the North East Region, particularly the Nalerigu Youth Association, for their support in the arrest and prosecution.
Police further warned that individuals and groups involved in the illicit drug trade would face the full force of the law.
