Trading slow on Ghana Stock Exchange as investors stay cautious

Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) was subdued on Wednesday, 24 September, as investors exercised caution following recent market rallies.

Despite the lighter activity, the main indices edged higher, reflecting mild optimism among market participants.

Market turnover fell sharply compared to Tuesday’s bustling session. Total traded shares dropped from nearly 5 million worth over GHS20 million to just 746,000 shares valued at about GHS9.3 million.

Several factors contributed to the restrained activity. Market watchers cited investor caution after a strong run-up in prices and a renewed focus on blue-chip companies with steady performance.

“It’s a classic case of traders taking a breather to reassess valuations after recent rallies,” one Accra-based broker observed.

Among the active counters, Ecobank Ghana (EGH) and Fan Milk (FML) recorded notable gains, while Guinness Ghana Breweries (GGBL) slipped, drawing attention away from some consumer-goods investors.

TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana (TOTAL) continued to see steady demand, underscoring the market’s preference for stability and strong fundamentals despite modest price changes.

The benchmark indices reflected this mixed but positive sentiment.

GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) advanced 28.39 points to close at 7,829.09, extending its impressive year-to-date gain to more than 60 per cent.

Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) added 25.9 points to settle at 3,694.87, up 55.2 per cent for the year.

Even with lower volumes, the value of trades in select equities remained significant, particularly in TOTAL, FML and GGBL, indicating continued investor confidence in established firms with consistent earnings records.

Overall, Wednesday’s session highlighted a market pausing for breath yet maintaining upward momentum, signalling that investors remain constructive on the GSE’s long-term prospects while carefully managing short-term risk.
