Rivers, forests to become security zones in galamsey fight

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The government is set to designate all rivers and forests in Ghana as security zones in a renewed crackdown on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah announced the measure, cautioning that anyone who engages in mining activities in these protected areas will be doing so at their own risk.

“We are moving another step further, and that step is to declare all water bodies and forests security zones. If you stay there and engage in illegal mining, it will be at your own risk,” Mr Buah said.

He explained that the government’s commitment to ending galamsey is unwavering, adding that perpetrators must not expect leniency.

“When the President said we are going to use every measure, this is what he meant. How can people devastate red zones within nine months and still have the audacity to defend their actions?” the Minister questioned.

Mr Buah revealed that several arrests have already been made, with cases currently at different stages of prosecution.

He emphasised that the Attorney General is directly supervising the legal process to ensure accountability.

“I think the Attorney General is on top of this matter, and anybody engaged in illegal mining, we don’t care who you are or how politically connected, you will be arrested and prosecuted,” Mr Buah added.
